15 Nutritional And Health Benefits Of Cabbage

The word ‘Cabbage’ is derived from the old French word ‘Caboche’ which means head. It is an annual vegetable crop having dense- leaved head. This vegetable is closely related to broccoli and cauliflower and is a multi-layered vegetable. The weight of the cabbage usually ranges from 0.5 to 4 kilograms and the colour can be green, red, purple or white. Green cabbages are the most common form. Cabbage is high in nutritional value and it contains plenty of vitamin K, vitamin C, folate and dietary fiber. There are several different ways for consuming it such as salad (raw cabbage), pickle, stewed, steamed, and sautéed.

Some bacteria such as- Clostridium, Shigella, E. coli etc can survive in shredded cabbage. Cabbage can also be contaminated from water, soil, animals etc during growing, harvesting etc. So, if it is consumed without proper washing or as raw, it can cause food- borne illness.


Excess consumption of cabbage may increase intestinal gas production. This causes bloating and flatulence. So the persons having gas problems should avoid cabbage.


Goiter is any enlargement of thyroid gland. It can occur due to normal, increased or decreased thyroid hormone production. Cabbage is a goiter- promoting food. It contains small amounts of thiocyanate. When iodine intake is less or in iodine deficiency, thiocyanate helps in goiter formation.
