Home Remedies for Strep Throat
1. Cayenne Pepper–
Having anti-inflammatory properties the spice is pretty effective in giving you relief. Apart from that the presence of Capsaicin can also aid in removing toxins and disease agents out of the body. You can mix ¼ teaspoon Cayenne powder with three grated cloves and one tablespoon of honey. Take a half teaspoon every half an hour and very soon the soreness in your throat would be gone.
2. Saltwater gargle–
This is the most tried and tested method to relieve your throat from the pain and discomfort. Just add one half teaspoon salt to a cup of warm water. Stir it well so that the salt gets dissolved. You can gargle in your mouth and then spit the liquid out. Using this method in one or two days you can get sufficient relief.
Apparently sage has antibacterial properties, and that is why it proves useful in the treatment of strep throat. First, add one teaspoon of sage leaves to hot water and let it be. Open the liquid after 10 minutes and strain it completely. Drink this tea twice a day till you feel better. You can also mix one teaspoon salt and lemon juice to one-half cup of sage tea. Use this as your gargle for three to four times a day.
A rich source of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits, Cinnamon is quite useful for strep throat patients. You can mix one-half teaspoon of Cinnamon powder to hot water. Leave the mixture for 10 minutes. Later drink the mixture at least four times a day or till you feel improvement.
5. Sunflower oil–
In case strep throat is causing hoarseness in voice or making it difficult for you to talk then sunflower oil can come to rescue. Just drink a teaspoon of the oil slowly such that it properly coats the inner lining of your throat. However, make sure that you do not drink water after that as that may spoil the benefit provided.
Apart from being an anti-bacterial, Onion is also antiseptic and qualifies as a healthy treatment method. Slice onion into thick pieces and chew them slowly till the juices start flowing in your throat and the bacteria eliminated. If you want you can add three to four tablespoons of onion juice to a glass of warm water and gargle frequently.
Being analgesic in nature Chamomile can be used to rid you of pain and fever, two symptoms that are quite prominent in strep throat. Take a cup of hot water and add three teaspoons of chamomile flowers to it. Leave it to rest for 5-10 minutes, strain and add lemon juice and honey to it. For the next two to three days drink this tea and feel the respite.
8. Lemon and honey–
Lemon is known for having sufficient Vitamin C, and that keeps the bacteria away. Take a glass of lukewarm water and mix one teaspoon of lemon and honey to it. Slowly sip this liquid and do that as many times as you can because that only would give you the relief you require.
Not only beneficial for strep throat, garlic also boosts your immune system functioning thus reducing the possibility of falling sick again. You can peel a slice and suck on the juice or crush so that the juice can go inside. To add on to the taste, you can have it with honey as that would also provide quick results.
10. Apple Cider vinegar–
It is one of the best treatments that a person can take for strep throat. Take a cup of warm water and mix one or two teaspoons of the same to it. Later gargle using this solution. Also mixing apple cider vinegar with honey and drinking it can provide relief.
Researches have proved that elderberry is useful in combating respiratory infections — travellers who were using elderberry they showed fewer chances of respiratory problems than those who were not. You can take it as Elderberry tea, capsules and elderberry powder. It is possible that you may find it in the liquid format as well.
12. Bone Broth–
Having a bone broth not only keeps you hydrated but also provides nourishment to deal with the ailment. You can either make it at home or buy protein powder made from bone broth. Consume it three times in a day to get immediate relief from the pain in the throat.
13. Peppermint oil–
Helpful in reducing the swelling in your throat, peppermint oil is extremely useful in respiratory infections as well. You can add 1-2 drops of the oil to warm water and drink. Or add the oil to your toothpaste and use it as it is. Apart from that, you can also apply it on your chest, temples, and throat for best results.
14. Thyme oil–
By supporting your immune and respiratory systems, Thyme oil is an effective treatment for strep throat. Research conducted in the past show its effectiveness to resisting antibiotic-resistant Add two drops to water and use this as a gargle. If you are experiencing body aches, you can add two drops to your bath and get rid of the same.

16. Baking soda–
Apart from the salt water gargle even baking soda can prove helpful in such a situation. Mix 1/8 teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of baking soda to warm water. Stir it well till they dissolve and now gargle with this solution around three times a day. You are bound to get relief from the problem soon.
Known to have antifungal and antibacterial properties, fenugreek can be consumed for getting rid of any bacterial infection. You may consume its seeds or apply its oil topically. Also, fenugreek tea can be a viable option as well.
18. Honey and marshmallow root tea–
Marshmallow root’s health benefits are plenty. It has been known for providing relief from the pain of a strep throat. Sip its tea at least three times a day so that relief comes quickly. Add some honey to improve taste and increase the bacteria-killing ability as well.
Antibiotic consumption can lead to the good bacteria in your body getting disturbed. To stop that from happening to consume probiotic items on a regular basis. These would include items like yoghurt, fermented vegetables etc.
20. Colloidal silver–
Colloidal Silver is an effective treatment for strep throat but only for short term. Consuming it for a longer duration may cause some side effects. You can use it as a gargle, and it would work on killing the bacteria present in your throat.
21. Chinese herbs–
There are quite a few herbs which work on your immunity system as well as kill the harmful bacteria. You can contact a Chinese herbalist and ask him to make up the perfect concoction for you. However, also enquire him for any known side effects before taking up the medicine created.
22. Vitamin D–
Supplements of vitamin D can be taken in any form and do work their best in giving you respite. As soon as you start feeling the chills and sore throat symptoms start consuming a dose of Vitamin D3 and you would see them going away. However, do not take the supplement for more than three days at a go. If the symptoms do not go after three days consult a doctor for advice.

Having a strep throat can be a difficult situation to deal with. There are multiple ways to prevent strep throat.
