10 Effective Home Remedies for Nausea

Nausea is pronounced as a stomach discomfort and the sensation of wanting to vomit. Nausea can lead to vomiting the contents of the stomach. It can be triggered by a virus, a digestive condition, pregnancy, or even an unpleasant odor. When you are feeling nauseous, you may become pale, experience a cold sweat, produce extra saliva, and notice an increased heart rate or pulse. In most of the cases, vomiting will actually relieve the feeling of nausea because the body has eliminated the harmful substance or digestive blockage that was causing the sensation.

This condition has many causes and can often be prevented. Everyone experiences nausea at one point or another. Whether yours is related to pregnancy, stomach flu, food poisoning, acid reflux, or cancer treatment, some natural remedies such as ginger-infused tea, aromatherapy, and acupuncture may provide relief. It’s important and necessary to check with your doctor to make sure any supplements or at-home remedies are safe and don’t interact with other medications you may be taking.

Here are some Home Remedies for Nausea:

1. Ginger root

Ginger is the most popular home remedy for nausea. Everyone knows that when feeling nauseous to consume ginger because it works. Ginger has antiemetic abilities according to a 2012 review. Ginger has been used for thousands of years as a good traditional nausea treatment. It’s unclear how ginger works to ease nausea, but it’s thought that active components such as gingerol directly affect the digestive and central nervous systems. Ginger is also known to promote the secretion of digestive juices and enzymes to help neutralize stomach acid while its phenol content which is high helps relax stomach muscles, soothe irritated tissues. All these phenols also help the intestines excrete any unwanted foods, toxins, and bacteria from the gut more quickly that may be contributing to nausea.

For relieving nausea in the morning, motion sickness, and even chemo-induced nausea just drink a ginger tea. You can even eat a small piece of fresh of ginger. You can make a ginger tea by peeling a thumb-sized chunk of ginger. Add it to a pot of water and bring it to a simmer. Simmer it for 20 minutes. Drink it throughout the day. You can also add a little honey to sweeten the tea if desired, just make sure it’s raw honey without any unwanted added sugars.

2. Acupressure

Another efficient and effective remedy for easing nausea quickly is to use acupressure. Acupressure is a method that applies pressure to specific areas on the body to ease symptoms. It can be performed at home or by a massage therapist. The theory for why acupressure works are thought to be through specific nerve stimulation which in turn send signals to the brain to release chemicals and hormones that reduce various symptoms – like nausea. In fact, it has been found to be just as effective at soothing and eliminating symptoms of nausea as leading anti-nausea medications, even in chemo patients.

What’s so great about acupressure is that it’s easy to do and can be easily performed at home or in your hospital room. Just simply apply firm pressure to the appropriate points on the body and hold it for 10-30 seconds or up to 5 minutes while breathing deeply. The pressure point for nausea is on our inner wrist, about two and a half inches down, in between two large tendons. To get relief from nausea, press on this pressure point in a circular motion for a few minutes.

3. Acupuncture

Eastern researchers have been stimulating pressure points throughout the body to alleviate pain and illness for thousands of years. Acupuncture, which is also one version of acupressure, involves inserting long, thin needles into the skin. A study found that acupuncture reduced the need for anti-vomiting medications after chemotherapy. A small study, published in June 2015 in Complementary Therapies in Medicine found that acupressure to the wrist significantly reduced nausea and vomiting in cardiac surgery patients. Both acupuncture and acupressure can help relieve nausea caused by cancer, acid reflux, and other conditions.

4. Drink chamomile tea

Chamomile tea is considered one of the world’s most popular herbal teas. About a million cups are consumed each and every day. Chamomile tea is also a popular folk remedy for nausea. It has a sedative effect that can help you sleep when you’re nauseous. It may also ease anxiety. Chamomile tea bags are available mostly at grocery stores, natural health stores. Traditionally, chamomile has also been valued as a digestive relaxant, and it has been used to treat various gastrointestinal disturbances, including nausea, vomiting, indigestion, motion sickness, and diarrhea. It helps in getting rid of nausea by dispelling gas, soothing the stomach and relaxing the muscles that move food through the intestines. You can make your own chamomile tea by pouring one cup boiling water over a tablespoon of dried or fresh chamomile flowers. Steep for at least five minutes, and strain.

5. Lemon

Lemons are a good source of citric acid, which is a naturally-occurring compound thought to aid digestion and soothe the stomach. Lemon is also best known for its ability to cleanse toxins from any part of the body. You can try adding freshly-squeezed lemon juice to water and sip throughout the day.

To get rid of nausea with lemon, simply cut open a fresh lemon and inhale every time you feel nauseous and just breathe the scent in. The scent of lemons may ease it. You can bite on a lemon also or use lemon oil or drink lemon water when nausea symptoms arise. If nausea is because of constipation, drinking warm water with lemon juice may stimulate your bowels. By ingesting too much lemon juice in a brief period, it may make nausea worse. According to a study done in 2014, inhaling lemon essential oil can help reduce nausea and vomiting in pregnant women.

6. Peppermint

Peppermint is also another traditional remedy that’s been around for many years. Peppermint oil is also recommended for its antiemetic and antispasmodic effects on the gastric lining and colon. Its leaves and its oil are both helpful in dealing with indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome. A study suggests that the scent of peppermint oil can ease nausea. Peppermint’s calming and numbing effect relaxes your stomach muscles so that bile can break down fats, and food can move through the stomach quickly.

Peppermint tea is the most common way to take this remedy. We can take peppermint capsules, or also drink peppermint tea to experience these benefits. We can also use essential oil of peppermint for aromatherapy, but it should be mixed it with a carrier oil. There are a number of peppermint oil uses for nausea. You can also try rubbing one to two drops into the back of your neck and bottoms of the feet. You can add five to 10 drops of peppermint oil to a cool or warm water bath or add two to three drops to a cool compress and place it over your head.

7. Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 has an important role in a range of physical and psychological functions, including its ability to provide indigestion relief and reduce pregnancy nausea. Vitamin B-6 has had on its own mixed results for treating nausea.

Take 25 milligrams of vitamin B6 three times daily until the symptoms disappear, to get rid of nausea. The typical dose is between 30 to 100 milligrams daily, in 1 to 3 doses for up to 3 weeks. Too much vitamin B-6 may worsen nausea, however. It may also cause serious side effects like abnormal heart rhythm, tingling, decreased muscle tone.

8. Meditation and deep breathing

Meditation which is the practice of focusing and calming the mind may help relieve nausea. The act of deep breathing has been shown time and time again to be incredibly effective for controlling nausea. It’s a type of relaxation technique that can be especially beneficial for nausea caused by stress and anxiety. Deep breathing is a meditation technique. But you can also do it on your own to relieve stress-related nausea. You can breathe in slowly through your nose, hold your breath for three seconds, and slowly breathe out. Repeat this several times until nausea subsides. If you can do this in the fresh air, then surely do it. The breathing technique which was to inhale through their nose for a count of three, hold their breath for a count of three, and exhale for a count of three was shown to reduce nausea by 62%.

9. Milk and Toast

Bread and milk are not as appetizing as it sounds but they help in treating stomach disorders and also help ease nausea. Bread helps to absorb excess stomach acid which triggers nausea and vomiting. Milk and toast is a very easy method and very effective also.

10. Hydration

Stick to clear liquids. If your stomach is upset, it doesn’t need the additional burden of digesting food. Stick to fluids until you feel a little better and have stopped feeling nauseous. Clear, room-temperature liquids, such as water or diluted noncitrus fruit juices, are easier to digest, and they are also necessary to prevent the dehydration that may result from vomiting or diarrhea. Make sure to drink plenty of cold water but also drink them in tiny sips.
