Grapes are my favourite from amongst the variety of fruits that nature has in store for us. Grapes are so juicy that they burst like a bomb of flavours in the mouth. One does hardly realise how many grapes he/she has eaten because nobody feels satisfied with the juicy, tangy yet sweet and delicious grapes. Like every fruit, there are various health benefits of grapes. But before we get to know the health benefits of grapes, let us know the different types of this fruit.

Types of Grapes:

  1. Auxerrois/Malbec/Cot:

Yes, these are one and the same terms used for the classic green coloured grapes which are commonly available in the market. It is cultivated in Canada as well as Luxemberg.

  1. Barbera:

This type of grape has a tarry taste.

  1. Cabernet Franc:

As the name suggests, this one is typical to the country of France. It is called Breton in the Loire valley.

  1. Cabernet Sauvignon:

This is the offspring of Cabernet Franc type of grape. The Cabernet Sauvignon wine is made from this type of grape which is very dear to the wine consumers. Even in Bordeaux, this grape is used along with Merlot grape. It consists of tannin which is a great red wine.

  1. Chardonnay:

These are also light green in colour cultivated in South Africa. It tastes much like fruit.

  1. Chenin Blanc:

This particular grape has a fruity taste. It is found mainly in the USA. It is known as Steen in South Africa.

  1. Cinsaut:

It is commonly known as Hermitage. It is used to mix with other grapes. It is cultivated in Australia, Sothern France.

  1. Colombard:

The wines made with this kind of grape have a tropical taste. It is mainly utilized in South Africa.

The list is very long because a variety of grapes are used to make wines of different tastes and flavours used in various combinations in varied parts of the world. These are just a handpicked of types of grapes amongst the long list owing to their popularity and fine taste.

After we’ve understood the types of grapes, it is time we concentrate on its health benefits. Here are the ways in which grapes nourish our bodies with its qualities:

  1. Grapes prevent Cancer:

Grapes contain powerful antioxidants like polyphenols. These antioxidants prevent the cells of our body from getting oxidized and thus forming unwanted molecules and cell structures in our body. Resveratrol in grapes could prevent growth of tumors in lymph, liver, stomach, breast, colon, skin cancer and leukemia. This Resveratrol is found in wines which when consumed occasionally is extremely beneficial to our health. Mind the word “occasionally”.

  1. They improve Heart Health:

Studies suggest that quercetin and resveratrol may present in grapes may reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and protects against bad cholesterol. It has lipid-lowering, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. All these properties together contribute to lowering the risk of Cardiovascular disease. Grapes reduce the blood –pressure in our body as well. Grapes also contain fiber and potassium which supports the heart health. Potassium reduces the sodium levels in the body to regulate blood pressure. Potassium also reduces the risk of stroke.

  1. Grapes for reducing Blood Pressure:

The salt in the various foods that we eat includes sodium which is the main cause of blood pressure amongst people. Potassium in grapes helps to normalise the sodium levels in our body. Fiber is equally important in keeping the pressure levels normal. Grapes contain a great amount of fiber too.

  1. Grapes prevent Constipation:

As we read, grapes are rich in fiber. Fiber is the undigested portion of the food we eat that helps easy excretion. It is the indigestible part of plants, the vegetables that we eat fruits, grains beans and legumes. They are plant-based carbohydrates which are much unlike your normal starch and sugar. They are not digested in your small intestine. It keeps the gut healthy and prevents constipation and the related health issues with them.

Quercetin in grapes has anti-inflammatory properties which could alleviate various allergies like runny nose, watery eyes and hives. Quercetin is a yellow crystalline pigment present in plants used as a food supplement to reduce allergic responses or boost immunity. There is however limited scientific research to support this.

  1. Grapes prevent Diabetes:

Inspite of popular belief which says that diabetics must not grapes, there are studies to support that consuming moderate amount of grapes could prevent type 2 Diabetes. This applies to whole fruit and not juices. Juices have preservatives and sugars and hence are of no use in preventing Diabetes. This serves dual purpose of satisfying the sweet tooth of the patients and also supplies them with healthy nutrients like vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Grapes contain the popular antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which is what you need for healthy eyes. They neutralize the free radicals that effect healthy vision of our eyes. They also reduce oxidative stress and damage to the retina of your eyes. It prevents various eye infections like cataract in people.

  1. Grapes for Acne reduction:

Resveratrol in grapes reduces acne in skin. The main reason for acne popping out from your skin is the oil that your skin releases along with impurities and bacteria. Reservatrol in grapes prevents oil formation in the layers of the skin which happens to be the major cause of acne. Acne also happens when harmful bacteria accumulate under the layers of the skin. Antioxidants in grapes come to the rescue for this solution.

Haven’t you heard wine keeps you young? Well wine doesn’t really do the job. It is the grapes which have anti-aging properties. They work wonders to keep you young with all the enormous nutritional benefits imparted by them on consumption.
