A normal blood pressure in an adult should be 120 millimetres of mercury(systolic) and 80 millimetres of mercury(diastolic). There are two types of blood pressure namely low blood pressure commonly known as Hypotension and high blood pressure known as Hypertension.

How is High Blood Pressure caused?

High blood pressure is developed when the heart has to work harder to circulate the blood in the body which causes hardening of the arteries, ultimately leading to heart attack.

Arithmetically ,there are three stages of high blood pressure.

Stage 1 – Pressure ranges from 130-139/80-89,

Stage 2 – 140 and above/90 and above

Stage 3 – Acute hypertension stage higher than 180.

At the hypertension stage, one should immediately consult a doctor.

Foods that cause High Blood Pressure

Food plays a very important role in the development of hypertension. Below listed are the common kinds of food that can contribute to the beginning of high blood pressure.

1. Salt

Salt is one of the active participants in the development of blood pressure. Infact, it is also not recommended for heart patients. The sodium present in it becomes harmful for the body. Talking in scientific terms, excess of sodium in the bloodstream does not give the kidneys the ability to throw away the excess water leading to a pressure on the kidneys.

There are many kinds of food that have a large amount of salt in it which harms the body. For example, frozen foods, pickles, canned items, packaged meat, etc.

2. Sugar

Commonly, sugar is not recommended to those who suffer from diabetes. But it is also a common cause for hypertension. Excess of sugar intake increases the body weight leading to obesity. Obesity is one of the major causes of high blood pressure. Balanced intake of calories can avoid the risk of high blood pressure.

3. Alcohol

A person should consume moderate amount of alcohol every day. Certain hard drinks contain a lot of calories which results into increase in the blood pressure. Reducing the amount of alcohol consumption can directly reduce the systolic blood pressure. Consumption of alcohol is inversely proportional to eating food. When a person consumes alcohol he eats less and when he doesn’t he eats more of the unhealthy foods leading to weight gain.

Other Common Causes apart from the Food Habits

Irregular sleep and unusual eating habits can affect the brain and entire body which leads to stress which in turn contributes to high blood pressure.

4. Obesity

Obesity is the accumulation of excess body fat. It leads to excessive weight gain. The gained weight is associated with high blood pressure. This takes place when the heart has to apply a lot of force on the blood to push against the walls of the arteries in the body. Being obese does not only cause high blood pressure but also affects the heart leading to cardiac arrest and kidney failures.

5. Older age
