The normal average length of any menstrual cycle for a normal adult woman is anywhere between a time period of 21 to 35 days. This may vary from person to person, especially young girls and old ladies.  Younger girls who have just hit puberty generally tend to have a cycle of eight to ten days. Whereas older women who are approaching menopause may have either extremely heavy and long periods or short and spotted menstruation cycles.

In normal cases, such irregularities occur as a result of the changes in female hormone levels, especially because of estrogen.  Estrogen hormone is significant as it helps to build up the uterine wall lining. This is called the endometrium. It will either nurture a fertilized egg or become the lining which is shed during menstrual period.

Here a sample of the uterine tissue is collected in order to analyze the condition of the pelvis and the uterus region. A biopsy can be accompanied by a diagnostic hysteroscopy that helps to see the entire interior region of the uterus. Hysteroscopy is an operative procedure where the patient is made fully unconscious and then the procedure is performed with the help of a lighted tube. This helps to see the uterus and remove any kind of polyp or cells that may be causing prolonged periods.

If some of the tests yield results that are unfavourable indicating some fatal disease such as cancer, then Hysterectomy is performed. It is a surgical procedure which involves the removal of the uterus.

4. Endometrial ablation –

If the diagnosis reveals some problem which can be handled without the removal of the uterus, then Endometrial ablation is performed.
